Consider this: During the 110th Congress, lawmakers introduced a whopping 11,059 bills, of which only 442, or 4 percent, became law.

It’s a startling statistic, one that puts things in perspective.  It’s clearly a daunting task to pass any legislative measure, and this congressional session probably won’t be any different. But, these numbers shouldn’t stop anyone from trying to help shape laws affecting the chemical industry. In fact, it should motivate them. With so many issues competing for attention, it’s important that elected officials are fully aware of the concerns and challenges facing our companies and our industry.

Over the past several weeks, we’ve been rolling out our brand new logo and the response so far, has been fantastic. Many of you have told us how much you like the new look, so I thought I’d share with you how we chose the final design.

To begin, the benzene ring has been part of SOCMA’s logo for the past 88 years. The six-sided ring, which represents organic chemistry, has served us well over the years.  But it doesn’t capture who SOCMA is today. Over the past two decades, we’ve worked hard to move forward the batch, custom and specialty chemical industry and needed a new name and look to reflect that.

In March, when we became the Society of Chemical Manufactures and Affiliates, the process of updating our logo was already well underway.  Graphic designers around the world were bidding for the chance to create our new look.
